Message from the Editor-in-Chief
As the Annals of Saudi Medicine moves into its 28th year, we look forward
to continuing our primary mission of serving the medical profession through
publication of high quality research work that has passed our rigorous peer
review process. As the leading medical and surgical journal in the region, we strive to
attract the best reports that would be of interest to physicians/scientists worldwide,
but especially to those in the Middle East region.
As the new Editor-in-Chief, I am committed to building on the successes of the last
few years that have been achieved under the direction of our outgoing Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Mahmoud Aljurf. Our efforts toward improving the journal in recent years
are reflected in part by the doubling of the journal’s Thompson ISI impact factor. This
significant achievement reflects improvements in the peer review process and editiing
that have resulted in a higher quality of published material, as well as indexing
of the journal in the National Library of Medicine’s database, PubMed, since 2004.
We are proud of these successes, but also recognize that further improvements are
needed in some areas, including further enhancements to the quality of the content,
production and scientific standing. A particularly important improvement we would
like to make is to further reduce the turnaround time for manuscripts, while at the same
time ensuring a proper evaluation. This continues to be a challenging task consideriing
the significantly increasing number of submitted articles. Manuscripts are submittted
from all over the world, but primarily from within the Middle East, including all Gulf
Cooperation Council countries, North Africa, Iran, Iraq, India, Turkey and Pakistan, as
well as an increasing number from Europe, South and North America and East Asia.
We thank the authors who submit their fine research work to the Annals, and want to
ensure that their work is treated fairly and in a reasonable period of time. High quality
manuscript reviews are the cornerstone of the peer review process and are essential
to maintaining the high standards of the journal. We thank our manuscript reviewers,
who generously support the Annals with their expertise, knowledge and wisdom. In
recognition of the outstanding contributions of reviewers who supported us in the
past year, we are publishing their names in this first issue of 2008.
Finally, we welcome any comments or suggestions from our readers, who we look
forward to continuing to serve in the coming years.
